Mexico: Pico de Orizaba

18,491 ft (5,636 m)

Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl, rises to 5,636 meters (18,491 feet) and is Mexico’s tallest mountain. This dormant stratovolcano is the third-highest peak in North America—behind Denali and Mount Logan—and a popular destination for experienced mountaineers. While the approach from Piedra Grande, the refugio at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet), is relatively short and accessible, the climb from there is a serious high-altitude ascent requiring acclimatization and basic alpine skills. Those who reach the top are rewarded with stunning views and the thrill of summiting one of Mexico’s most iconic peaks.
