Arkansas: Mt. Magazine
2,753 ft (839 m)
Where the Ozarks meet the sky, Magazine Mountain rises just enough to feel like a summit—and just quietly enough that you might miss it, if not for the marker tucked beneath the trees. It’s a highpoint that trades drama for subtlety, with forested trails, birdsong, and the soft hush of the Arkansas highlands.
The most direct route is the Signal Hill Trail, a gentle 1.5-mile loop through hardwoods and mossy clearings that leads to a stone map marker at the true summit. Other trails in Mount Magazine State Park explore scenic overlooks and ridge-top views above the Petit Jean River Valley. But the high point itself is shaded and serene—more about presence than panorama.
It won’t leave you breathless, but it may leave you quieter. For highpointers passing through, Magazine Mountain offers a moment to slow down, walk softly, and appreciate the small peaks in the journey.
