Alabama: Cheaha Mountain
2,413 ft (734 m)
Cheaha Mountain claims the title of Alabama’s highest point—an easy-access summit surrounded by the rolling ridges of the Talladega Mountains. A paved road leads almost to the top, where you’ll find a stone observation tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
But for those wanting more of a workout, the Lake Trail offers a more physical route from Cheaha Lake, climbing over 1,000 feet in just two miles. It’s a rewarding option for hikers looking to earn the view before joining the crowds at the top. Nearby trails like the Bald Rock Boardwalk and Pulpit Rock Trail offer additional scenic perspectives for those who want to stretch their legs even more.
Whether you drive or hike, Cheaha delivers broad vistas, CCC-era history, and a well-developed park experience—complete with a mountaintop restaurant where you can trade your summit snacks for sweet tea and fried green tomatoes. It’s one of the Southeast’s most accessible and scenic state highpoints.
