Virginia: Mt. Rogers

5,711 ft (1,741 m)

A hike through wide meadows, rocky ridges, and roaming wild ponies leads to Virginia’s highest point—Mount Rogers. Topping out at 5,729 feet (1,746 meters), this peak isn’t about panoramic views but quiet beauty. The summit, shrouded in a dense spruce-fir forest, is marked by a modest plaque tucked into the trees. Most hikers reach it via a scenic 4.5-mile route from Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park, where open vistas and boulder-strewn trails give the early miles an alpine feel. The Appalachian Trail passes nearby and connects with several approaches to the summit. While the top itself may be unassuming, the journey to Mount Rogers is one of the most memorable and unique highpoint hikes in the East.
