South Dakota: Black Elk Peak

7,244 ft (2,208 m)

Topping the Black Hills with wide-open views and sacred history, Black Elk Peak is the highest point in South Dakota and the tallest summit east of the Rockies. A 7-mile round-trip hike leads through ponderosa pine forests, granite spires, and alpine meadows before reaching the summit’s stone lookout tower—built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

On a clear day, you can see into four different states. The trail climbs steadily but isn’t technical, making it one of the most rewarding highpoints for both hikers and history buffs. Formerly known as Harney Peak, the summit was renamed in 2016 to honor Nicholas Black Elk, a revered Lakota holy man, and to recognize the site’s deep spiritual significance to the Lakota people.

Whether you’re here for the views, the story, or the summit badge, Black Elk Peak blends it all into one unforgettable stop on your 50-state journey.
