Oklahoma: Black Mesa

4,975 ft (1,516 m)

This isn’t the Oklahoma you think you know. Out here in the far reaches of the Panhandle, where the land tilts toward New Mexico and the sky goes on forever, Black Mesa rises like a memory of the ancient West. It’s quiet, windswept, and wide open—part high desert, part storybook solitude.

The trail to the highpoint begins in prairie grass and lava rock, crossing a few miles of open terrain before climbing a gentle slope to the top of the mesa. No switchbacks. No summit drama. Just you, the silence, and a stone monument marking the highest spot in Oklahoma.
